12 Unusual Products You Didn’t Know Were Vegan

By Cherie Gozon

There’s a rise in the vegan lifestyle among those who want healthier and more eco-friendly alternatives. Along the way, some are discouraged because they feel like they are restricted from all the yummy (albeit unhealthy) food out there. However, there are workarounds when it comes to food choices, especially when you know that there are products you didn’t know were vegan.

Here are a few products which may seem unusually vegan, but believe me when I say they are!

12 unusual products you didn't know were vegan

Potato Chips

If you’re looking for some salty vegan snacks, your trusty potato chip snack is your best option. They are thinly sliced potatoes fried in oil, so of course, they’re vegan.

However, it still pays to check the ingredients. Sour cream-flavored potato chips aren’t vegan since sour cream contains dairy. Still, you’ll be surprised at how many vegan chip options there are.

Marie Callender’s Dessert Pies

Eggs aren’t really required to make pie crust. A lot of butter is usually needed, though.

But check out Marie Callender’s Dutch apple, razzleberry, cherry crunch, lattice apple, and lattice peach frozen pies. They leave out the eggs and all the dairy products, so it’s worth a look if you haven’t already.

Products you didn’t know were vegan: Bagels

There are egg bagels, but most of the rest of them are vegan.

So if you start craving some carbs and find yourself headed to a bagel shop, just ask whoever’s in charge to be sure what you’re getting.

Stacy’s Pita Chips

Most bread and potato chips are vegan so it makes sense that Stacy’s Pita Chips are vegan. At least the plain salted one. These chips go well with any vegan snack recipe.

They do use real cheese for their Parmesan-flavored option.

Life Cereal

Life’s original and cinnamon versions are some of the tastiest vegan cereals available in the market.

Of course, you need to make sure you have them with non-dairy milk.

SuperPretzel Soft Pretzels

SuperPretzel brand soft pretzels are egg-free compared to many others that are made with eggs or those that get an egg wash before baking. This is what makes this one of the best vegan snack ideas.

The pretzels have gluten, yeast, and soda, so consumers get to enjoy the chewy, puffy bites.

Krispy Kreme Fruit Pies, Apple, Cherry, and Peach flavors

Craving some vegan sweet snacks? Krispy Kreme makes their doughnuts with eggs, but not for their fruit pies.

KK’s pie crust is totally different from the doughnuts. Even the texture is different!

Campbell’s Mushroom Gravy

Campbell’s Mushroom Gravy gives you all the guilty pleasures of graervy minus the guilt that comes with making gravy from animal juices.

It’s just like gravy and it’s sure to please everyone at the table. And that’s without cream or animal fat.

be alarmed by the word “Butter.” It may be in the name but it’s not among the ingredients.

The word “butter” here refers to peanut butter. It’s certainly not dairy butter.

Ritz Crackers

Are crackers vegan? You might have asked this question at some point because how could something that tastes this good be vegan? Don’t worry about that buttery taste because there’s none of that stuff in there.

Every greasy feeling in your mouth and your fingers is vegan-friendly. They go well with soup too!

Pillsbury Crescent Rolls

Pillsbury Crescent Rolls, like many other food products, taste like they’re packed butter. But the buttery taste comes from salt and vegetable oils.

You get all the flavor minus the actual butter.

Cinnamon and Chocolate Teddy Grahams

Vegans will love the cinnamon and chocolate varieties of Teddy Grahams since they don’t contain eggs or animal products.

Grab a bowl and pour in your favorite soy or nut milk!

Jell-O Instant Pudding

Jello-O’s instant pudding, unlike regular Jell-O, does not contain gelatin. Aren’t they the same? No.

The product is thickened by ingredients called tetrasodium pyrophosphate and disodium phosphate.

So, why is gelatin not vegan, but Jell-O is? It’s a mouthful, but still better than gelatin which comes from animals.

Takeaway

Isn’t it life-changing to know about these products you didn’t know were vegan? It doesn’t feel so restrictive at all, don’t you think? Going for a healthier lifestyle doesn’t always mean that it lacks flavor and taste. You’ll find that most vegan and other diet foods are more delicious than what you expected!
