Family night is a favorite of ours around here. We like to switch it up a bit between going out or staying in—but really, we all prefer a stay-at-home family night. And usually, that involves a great movie. If you’re like us, you want to make it fun without making the prep for it super exhausting. Eventful enough yet chill enough.
Here are a few tips to making family night happen!

Get snacks
This is key. Seriously, don’t skip this part. When you place that grocery order (or just hop on Amazon) get some popcorn and movie night snacks like gummies, Crunch, Skittles, or whatever your fancy is. Don’t forget drinks! A fun family night drink kids love is a blend of clear soda (sprite or 7-up) with fruit punch. Super fun drink!
Clean up
Clean up the TV area that day so when night falls, you can plan to just set things up.
Pick a movie
Plan ahead for this one. We have made the mistake of asking the kids right when we sit down “what movie do you want to watch?”—let’s just say that takes forever. So, pick your movie ahead of time. I’m going to help you out with a recommendation for your next movie night. This is a new-to-us move and I think you’ll enjoy it!
In full disclosure this post is sponsored—in no way does this sway my opinion.
Mount Hideaway Mysteries: Exes and Oh No’s totally vibes like a Hallmark Mystery. It’s super clean, but not “picture perfect” either like some moves that are known for being actually family-friendly and clean. We liked it a lot. So much so that my husband, at the end of the movie, was like “Wait. Where’s the next one? I need to know what happens next!” And we all chimed in agreeable: I KNOW, RIGHT?! I love that it was made by and for homeschoolers and breaks the walls down on a lot of stereotypes.
There are two 80’s references that totally got me and my husband. I’ll give you a hint: one is to a movie and the other will totally get a song stuck in your head. Let me know if you catch it when you see the movie!
You can catch this move on Amazon, Apple TV, Google Play Movies & Tv, and iTunes. We watched it on Amazon.

Family Nights Are Invaluable
Close family relationships are invaluable, and spending time together doing something FUN—that the whole family enjoys—is an amazing way to build and strengthen those bonds. These are the memories that will stay with your kids as they venture into life when they are dozing off to sleep at night thinking about their favorite thing, and the answer they give to the question “what’s your favorite thing to do?”— “hang out with my family”.
