Looking for a great music appreciation curriculum to use in your homeschool? Well, we have been thoroughly enjoying this music appreciation curriculum over the past few months in our homeschool !!!! Take a peek inside:
Why Music Appreciation
Whenever I fold in any subject outside of our core subjects (core subjects like Math, Science, History, Language Arts), I always ask myself WHY? . Adding something into your schedule just because it looks cool and you think it would be fun is neat and all, but it’s important to know why it’s needed and if it’s needed.
Music Appreciation, like other creative study areas, is essential to a child’s mental development. They acquire skills in these creative study areas that they otherwise wouldn’t in other areas of study.
Kids are natural music lovers, in fact they are natural creative beings. We may not see the prize winning performance or work of art by our adult standards, but children are in fact creatively inclined and artistically inclined by nature.
Exposing our kids to music and an understanding of it early on enhances their entire learning process! It promotes creativity, coordination, language development, and so much more! They don’t need to learn how to play a musical instrument to benefit from music!
Music also provides the opportunity for children to communicate in another way – like feelings or ideas. At a young age I was drawn into the piano. At age five my parents hired a private piano teacher to come to our home and teach me to play. It became my outlet for all things – happiness, sadness, anger, and even confusion. It’s still the place I turn to when I need to calm my mind.
Another fun fact: According to a recent study from the Institute of Education, University of London – playing classical music (think Beethoven, Mozart, Bach…) to young kids boosts their ability to concentrate, boosts their self-discipline, improves their overall listening skills, and they are likely to appreciate a wider range of music genre in later years.
There is some of my geekified info to back up teaching music appreciation in your homeschool. Now on to sharing this wonderful program we’ve been using!

Zeezok Music Appreciation
I highly recommend using a structured program like Zeezok to help you teach music appreciation. The benefit of having something structured like this, meaning it’s a pre-organized curriculum that allows you to dive right into teaching, is that you’ll have the confidence that you’ll cover all the important aspects of teaching this subject to your student(s).
We are using this bundle, it’s called Music Appreciation for the Elementary Grades.
It comes with everything you need to teach for a full 28 weeks, 4 weeks for each musician. This bundle covers the following musicians: Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, and Schubert. You can find individual composer/musician studies on others by check out the Zeezok site.
The activity book includes copy work, reading comprehension, comprehension questions, basic map work related to the musician, information about their family, crossword puzzles, word finding, and so much more. It’s incredibly interactive! I love that!
The Music Discs include a disc for the weekly musicians and activities from the activity book. On them are the music that is included in the books, exactly as the music piece is written, as well as 35 additional recorded pieces, and more! It’s a great supplemental tool to help enhance your kiddos understanding of the music concepts being taught each week!
The Lapbook CD is really neat for those who like to create lapbooks to go along with their studies.
The curriculum fully meets national standards for a music appreciation for Kindergarten through Sixth Grade. Though the reading books are definitely fitting within that range, I do think a student in Middle School could benefit from this program too. Yes, it is THAT GOOD!
