Working on the periodic table in your homeschool? Not sure how to help your child memorize elements? I’ve got the solution for you right here!
This is such a fun program and I couldn’t wait to share it with you all!
In full disclosure, I received access to this program in exchange for my review. I was compensated for my time. In no way does this sway my thoughts expressed belowl
Why Memorize the Periodic Table
Sure, once you are deep into Chemistry you would learn many of the elements, but how neat is it to be able to know these beforehand? Or even use this program to help your student learn them while they are working through Chemistry.
The periodic table is useful for students (aspiring scientists or not) because it will help them understand the predictability of the different types of chemical reactions that are likely for each element.
The table is useful for modern students and scientists because it helps predict the types of chemical reactions that are likely for an element. Rather than memorize facts and figures for each element, a quick glance at the table reveals a lot about the reactivity of an element, whether it is likely to conduct electricity, whether it is hard or soft, and many other characteristics.
What is Memorize the Periodic Table
Memorize the Periodic Table is a super neat course made up of several videos to help the student memorize the periodic table. It’s been an amazing resource for us and I can not wait to use it with all of my kids as they get older. They use a method which combines imagery, storytelling, and audio. So they are engaging several senses at one time.
It’s a method knows as mnemonic devices. What is a mnemonic device? Put simply, it is a device or method that provides an easy way to remember something. Phrases, songs, rhymes, acronyms, fun stories are used frequently to help someone learn and memorize things that would otherwise be difficult to do. Using mnemonic devices has been proven to build up memory retention.
My thoughts on Memorize the Periodic Table
To be honest – I didn’t think this method would work. I saw it and thought “well, at least it will be fun”. But boy was I wrong (and right at the same time!).
My kiddo quite literally gained the ability to recite all the elements within each session as soon as the video session was complete. Each video is just about 10 min, most are a little under, and they cover about 10 elements per video. I was floored I was when she began reciting the elements to me as soon as she finished the first one, and to see this pattern continue as she kept working through the videos. It was SO stinkin’ awesome!
The stories used in the videos is pretty comical, which draws in anyone watching it. As an adult, I know I enjoyed it just as much as my kiddo. The voice over is from a man who I think may be Australian? So the accent helps for further engagement. Accents always seem to make things more interesting and engaging, don’t they?
It is pretty amazing that this program was put together to help kids learn their elements. This program can be used with elementary students, middle school students, and high school students. The information is not presented in a ooberly complex way to where only older kids will benefit from it.
Whenever I see a program like this created I get so tickled! I think it’s just amazing how someone can simplify something that is usually incredibly difficult to do. And to hear my kiddo say “can I do that next video to memorize the periodic table?” is like music to my ears. Anything that promotes excitement and eagerness to learn in my children is a total win in this mamas book.
I wish I had this when I was in school, in fact – I wish I had it when I was in college as I was a science major!
Memorize the Periodic Table is simple to use (just a click to play), fun, engaging, and it really does work. It’s not one of those programs where you hear about how awesome they are only to realize it does not deliver. Memorize The Periodic Table is totally legit!
