I love looking into the Word to find out what it specifically says about a particular topic. Today, I’m sharing some thoughts and findings regarding what the Bible says about Gentleness.
First, let’s see what the dictionary says about Gentleness.
Dictionary.com defines Gentle as
Kindly; amiable: a gentle manner. Not Severe, rough or violent. To tame; render tractable. To mollify; calm; pacify. To ennoble; dignify.
What the bible says about gentleness
Proverbs 15:4 A gentle tongue is a tree of life, but perverseness in it breaks the spirit.
Proverbs 15:1 A soft answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger.
Colossians 3:12 Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience,
Watch your words
Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue, and those who love it will eat its fruits.
You can rip someone apart with your words, or you can build them up. What you say and how you say it matters.
Even if someone is speaking to you in a harsh manner, choose to respond with gentleness.
Proverbs 12:18 There is one whose rash words are like sword thrusts, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.
Philippians 4:5 Let your gentleness be evident to all.
Ephesians 2:10 For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Have you responded to someone harshly recently? Take your words, and imagine them being said to you. How does that feel? Was there a better way you could have expressed yourself in that conversation?
Purposefully and intentionally remember to speak in gentleness today. Think of that one person, which somehow just always manages to get under your skin. When you re-encounter that person, put these verses into practice. If they speak to you harshly, choose to respond with gentleness.
Time with Him
Ask Him to teach and help you speak with gentle words. Pray for forgiveness, for the times you have not been gentle in your speech. Pray that He help you to have a heart of gentleness, and a heart of obedience.
